Lady Hornets Secures First Win in Girls’ Basketball Season

Magoffin County notched its inaugural victory in the 2023-24 girls’ high school basketball season by defeating Buckhorn 49-35 during the Hyden Citizens Bank Classic at Leslie County High School on Thursday, Dec. 21. The team’s dominance on the boards played a pivotal role, outrebounding Buckhorn 46-36.

Bella Trusty emerged as the game’s top scorer, contributing 18 points to lead Magoffin County to victory. Trusty spearheaded a trio of Magoffin County players who achieved double-digit scoring. Macy Williams recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Jaylee Reed added 10 points to the scoreboard.

Magoffin County showcased its offensive depth with contributions from seven different players. Alongside Trusty and Williams, Jaylee Reed, Emily Sluss (four points), Maddie Salyer (two points), Jerrica Reed (two points), and Abigail Bradley (one point) all made crucial scoring plays.

Maddie Salyer also stood out on the boards, matching game-high rebounding honors with 11 rebounds of her own.

Haley Stidham led Buckhorn with 11 points, being the sole player to reach double figures for the team. Other scorers for Buckhorn included Olivia Richardson (7 points), Haylee-Drew Blank (5 points), Ariana Pedroza (5 points), Taylor Miller (4 points), and Chelsea Mullins (3 points).

Clay County Vs Magoffin County Girls Basketball

In a separate matchup, Magoffin County fell short against Clay County, succumbing to a 39-30 defeat in the Hyden Citizens Bank Classic at Leslie County High School on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Madison Pendland starred for Clay County with a game-high double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Anna Samples and Faith Helton also contributed with 10 points each.

Bella Trusty, once again, led Magoffin County’s scoring with 10 points, standing as the lone player to reach double figures. Other contributors for Magoffin County included Emily Sluss (5 points), Maddie Salyer (4 points), Macy Williams (4 points), and Abigail Bradley (3 points). Salyer showcased her prowess on the boards, securing 10 rebounds in the game.
