The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents in Rowan and surrounding counties about scammers calling people who have loved ones in jail and demanding money for their release. According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are using publicly available inmate information to make the calls appear legitimate and may claim to represent Probation and Parole, Pretrial Services or another official agency. Residents are urged not to send money based on these calls and to warn family members who may be targeted.
