The U.S. Department of Energy has issued an emergency order aimed at preventing potential blackouts across a regional power grid serving portions of Kentucky and 12 other states. The order, effective Oct. 13-16, allows PJM Interconnection to bring additional power-generating units online as needed to maintain electricity supplies. Officials cite unusually high electricity demand, scheduled power plant maintenance and transmission outages as reasons for the precautionary measure. The order does not mean blackouts are expected. It is intended to help prevent outages, and no special action has been requested of residential customers.
