Wolfe County Search & Rescue responded Thursday evening, October 22, to Princess Arch in the Red River Gorge after a female hiker suffered a lower leg injury while descending toward the arch. Rescue personnel located the hiker, assessed and splinted her injured leg, and carried her back to the trailhead. Her hiking companions then transported her to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. With fall foliage drawing increased visitors to the Red River Gorge, rescue officials are reminding hikers to wear appropriate footwear, know their routes, carry charged phones and use caution on steep or uneven terrain.
