🚨 ROWAN COUNTY LANDFILL ODORS COULD INCREASE DURING UPCOMING IMPROVEMENTS
Appalachia Insider · November 3, 2026
Residents living near the Rowan County Landfill in Morehead may notice stronger odors over the next several weeks as Rumpke works to improve its gas collection system.
According to LEX18, the company expects the project to take approximately three to four weeks, during which odors could temporarily increase.
The work includes expanding pipelines connected to the landfill’s gas-to-energy system, which captures methane produced by decomposing waste.
Residents living near the landfill have reported ongoing odor concerns, and Rumpke says reducing those complaints is a priority following its purchase of the facility in February 2026.
The company says the temporary disruption is intended to produce long-term improvements.
Residents with questions or concerns can contact Rumpke at (800) 828-8171.
