A Paintsville man accused of financial crimes involving his deceased mother’s accounts has waived his preliminary hearing, sending his case to a Johnson County grand jury. John L. Carroll faces multiple charges following an investigation into the death of his mother, Patty Carroll, whose remains were discovered inside their Paintsville residence in October. Investigators determined she had apparently been deceased for approximately four months. According to court documents reported by The Paintsville Herald, Carroll allegedly wrote 17 checks to himself from his mother’s account following her death, totaling more than $26,250. Carroll faces charges of abuse of a corpse, failure to report a death, theft by unlawful taking, and 17 counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. He remains in custody at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center as the case proceeds through the judicial system. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
