🦌 DEER HUNTERS REMINDED OF CWD RESTRICTIONS AHEAD OF MODERN GUN SEASON
Appalachia Insider · November 8, 2026
With Kentucky’s modern gun deer season approaching, hunters are being reminded of restrictions on transporting deer harvested in counties affected by Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) regulations.
A sign posted near H&M Butchering advises hunters that whole deer cannot be accepted from the following nine counties:
• Laurel
• Whitley
• Rockcastle
• Pulaski
• McCreary
• Lincoln
• Casey
• Russell
• Wayne
The notice states that boneless deer meat from these counties can still be accepted.
All nine counties are part of Kentucky’s CWD Surveillance Zone. Under state regulations, whole deer carcasses cannot be transported outside the surveillance zone. Deboned meat and certain other permitted parts may be transported.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease affecting deer, elk, and other members of the deer family. The restrictions are intended to help prevent its spread.
Kentucky’s modern gun deer season begins Saturday, November 14.
