This Sunday’s Magoffin In History offers a colorful look at a marching band passing through downtown Salyersville decades ago. Beyond the vintage automobiles and marching musicians, the photograph captures a fascinating glimpse of the town’s former businesses. On the right side of the street stands a large, two-story white building with decorative porches and striped awnings. Farther down, a vertical theater sign and another sign reading “HOTEL” are visible among the storefronts. On the opposite side, a partially visible sign appears to advertise Ashland, possibly marking a former service station. The marching band’s uniforms also raise questions. They appear to feature red or maroon with gold trim, rather than Magoffin County’s traditional maroon and white. Do you remember the theater, the hotel, or the large white building? Can you identify any of the businesses or the marching band? We invite longtime residents to help us identify these landmarks and preserve another piece of our community’s history.
