I heard an old preacher years ago say, “If time lasts, people won’t be able to understand the parables and language used in the Bible.” I never really gave this much thought until recently. While sitting at a table, a cousin and I were discussing the scripture Corinthians 6:14-15, talking about being “unequally yoked.” A teenager who walked by and overheard us asked what that phrase meant.
I began trying to explain to her what a yoke was in reference to a team of horses, mules, or oxen. She had no idea what I was referring to or about. She, and most of her generation, have never seen a team of any of the above being worked, and suddenly my mind flashed back to that old preacher in that church all those years ago.
He was right.
Today, we live in a society of technology where kids spend more time indoors than out. The old way of life is all but gone now, and those of us left who vaguely know or understand how life was in these old mountains are becoming ancient or extinct. I can’t help but wonder how much more will change if, as the old preacher said, “time lasts long enough.”
