When walking along the streets of Salyersville Kentucky on a fantastic night during the 1970s and into the 1980s, it was common to hear the sounds of laughter, joy, and community involvement.
That Salyersville was a different place than the one I grew up in.
Although it is hard for me to fathom, Magoffin County used to house a movie theater, roller rink, and many other forms of community entertainment. Sadly, amenities such as these have been missing in this area for quite some time.
Although local leaders have recently been putting extensive effort into providing entertainment for holidays and special occasions, these chances for recreation are unfortunately few and far between. Caused primarily by the economic downturn, joy and merrymaking of this type have been long missed in Magoffin County.
However, over the last couple of weeks, a few local entrepreneurs have attempted to bring some semblance of entertainment and community joy back into the area. Local DJ Timothy Lykins (DJ Timmy) has joined Magoffins Mi Hacienda to provide music and karaoke to a community desperately in need of entertainment and opportunities to interact with each other; Fridays of each week have shown standing-room-only crowds. Where a mix of good food, great music, and community entertainment are welcome lost friends, who have been sorely missed.
